Early Life

Stoops was one of six children born to Ron and Evelyn Stoops. He attended Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, where his father was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator. Stoops was one of the children among the six. The former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and the former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops are his brothers. He is also the brother of Mike Stoops.

In the years after his graduation from high school, Stoops participated in college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes, where he remained until 1988.

Contract

Stoops’s current deal with Kentucky is valid until June of 2031. Earning $9 million a season makes him the eighth-highest-paid coach in college football history. Stoops’ salary for the 2023 season was slightly lower than Jimbo Fisher’s salary of $9.15 million. If Stoops had departed for A&M, Kentucky would have been entitled to a buyout of $4 million.

Career

Mark Stoops started coaching in 1990 after playing defensive back for the Iowa Hawkeyes in college. Until 1991, he served as an RA at the University of Iowa. In his subsequent position, he oversaw athletics and coached defensive backs at Macedonia, Ohio’s Nordonia High School. For the years 1992–1995, Stoops filled this position. After joining the South Florida Bulls in 1996, he remained their defensive backs coach until 1997. The Wyoming Cowboys had him as their defensive backs coach from 1997 to 1999. He went to Houston in 2000 to take over as co-defensive coordinator, following in the footsteps of his head coach at Wyoming, Dana Dimel.

In 2001, he departed from Houston to join the Miami Hurricanes as their defensive backs coach. He departed from Miami in 2004 to join his brother Mike’s coaching team at Arizona State.Until 2009, when he took a position coaching defensive backs at Florida State, he stayed with his brother. This position led to his November 2012 hiring as head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky hired Mark Stoops to succeed Joker Philips, who had guided the Wildcats to a 2-10 record the previous season.

A 2-10 record resulted from Stoops’ first year at the helm of the Wildcats. But he became better the following two seasons, winning five-and-a-half games. After getting off to a disastrous start (0-2 in the first two games), he guided the Wildcats to their first winning season (7-6) in 2016. Thanks to Stoops’s leadership, the Kentucky Wildcats football team is now a respectable and formidable opponent; before facing the Florida Gators in Week 5, the squad had a perfect record for the season.
