He is the only cricketer who played for India to get over 400 wickets in tests and 5000 runs.

When he was just 24 years old, he won the 1983 World Cup for India and became the first young captain to win the World Cup. At the time of his retirement in 1994, he was the first player to collect 200 wickets in one-day internationals. He also held the world record for the most number of wickets taken in test cricket, which was subsequently beaten by Courtney Walsh in the year 2000.: Until 2023, Kapil Dev held the highest individual score (175*) recorded by a batsman batting at number 5 or lower in one-day internationals. Glen Maxwell eventually disqualified him from the record.

Immediately following his retirement, he served as the head coach of the Indian national team from September 1999 to September 2000.
