The story of Ellen MacArthur is characterized by perseverance and determination. By saving her school lunch funds to purchase her boat, she gained prominence following her second-place finish in the Vendée Globe solo circumnavigation sailing competition 2001.
In 2005, she surpassed the world record for the quickest solo circumnavigation of the Earth. Additionally, she set multiple records for different segments of the journey. During a particular stage of her remarkable journey, she managed to rest for a mere 20 minutes over three days, as the unyielding ocean waves constantly posed a risk of overturning her boat. She surpassed the previous world record by 32 hours on February 7, 2005.
After retiring from her professional sailing career on September 2, 2010, MacArthur established the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. This charitable organization collaborates with businesses and educational institutions to expedite the shift towards a circular economy.
Early Life
MacArthur was born in Derbyshire and resided there with her immediate family, consisting of her parents and two brothers, Fergus and Lewis. Both of her parents were teachers. Initially, she developed a passion for sailing and purchased her first boat by diligently saving her school lunch money over three years.
MacArthur received his education at Wirksworth County Infants and Junior Schools and the Anthony Gell School. Additionally, he gained job experience at a sailing school in Hull.

Career
MacArthur first became well-known when she came in second place in the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world sailing race in 2001.
In 2003, she led an attempt to break the round-the-world record for a crewed boat in Kingfisher 2, a catamaran that used to belong to Bruno Peyron and was called Orange. However, a broken mast in the Southern Ocean stopped the race.
In 2004, she tried to break the record for the fastest west–east transatlantic crossing on the yacht but failed by about one and a quarter hours after more than seven days of sailing.
After returning to England, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) on February 8, 2005. This was to honor her accomplishment. She is thought to be the youngest ever to receive this award.
In 2007, MacArthur was in charge of BT Team Ellen, a sailing team with Nick Moloney from Australia and Sébastien Josse from France.
President Nicolas Sarkozy made her a Knight of the French Order in March 2008.
MacArthur said in October 2009 that she would stop racing to focus on writing about how resources and energy are used in the world economy.
Cancer Trust
MacArthur established the Ellen MacArthur Trust, a registered charity, in 2003 to assist young sailors aged 8 to 24 in regaining confidence while undergoing treatment for cancer, leukemia, and other severe illnesses.
MacArthur collaborated with other athletics figures to contribute £4 million to the Rainbows Children’s Hospice in 2008. The objective is to provide terminally ill youth with individualized lodging units so that family members can visit children of different ages.

MacArthur established the Ellen MacArthur Foundation at the Science Museum on September 2, 2010. This foundation is dedicated to advancing the circular economy.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the Prince of Wales’s International Sustainability Unit established a prize fund of US$2 million on May 17, 2017, to support innovative solutions for addressing plastic waste.
