Ken Miles was born to Clarice Jarvis and Eric Miles in Sutton Coldfield on November 1, 1918.

At the age of 15, Miles decided to leave school and begin an apprenticeship with Wolseley Motors. He attended a technical school during his apprenticeship to learn about car construction.. Prior to joining the British Army in 1942, he was actively involved in motorcycle racing.

Career

Ken Miles initially began a career in motorcycle racing. He went on to serve as a tank commander in the British Territorial Army during World War II. After seven years of working with machines, he was promoted to staff sergeant in 1942.

Following the end of the war, he began his racing career. He competed in races organized by the Vintage Sports Car Club against Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, and Alvis. He later moved to the prestigious British carmaker Ford V8 Frazer-Nash.

In 1955, he began the process of designing and manufacturing a car based on the MG component. He named the vehicle Flying Shingle. In 1957, he oversaw the engine and transmission of the Porsche 550S, a successful race car.
