Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie, the father of the C programming language, was born in Bronxville, New York, on September 9, 1941. He passed away on October 12, 2011, at the age of 70. C is a programming language. He and his longtime colleague Ken Thompson developed it . Furthermore, he is the creator of B programming language and Unix OS.
Ritchie and Thompson won the 1983 ACM Turing Award. He also received the 1990 IEEE Hamming Medal. Bill Clinton awarded him the National Medal of Technology in 1999.
Early Life
Alistair E. Ritchie reared Dennis Ritchie. He came from a scientific family. His dad worked at Bell Labs and co-wrote The Design of Switching Circuits.
Dennis relocated to Summit, New Jersey during his childhood. He completed his education at Summit High School. In 1963, his degrees were in applied mathematics and physics from Harvard.

Ken Thompson and Ritchie collaborated in the 1960s, at Bell Labs. They developed the Multics operating system. Following this, Thompson obtained an obsolete PDP-7 computer. With help from Ritchie and others, he developed his own operating system and application programs from scratch. Brian Kernighan coined the terminology “Unix” in 1970 as a play on words derived from the term “Multics.” Thompson created B and replaced it with C. Scientists from GE, MIT, and Bell Labs created the time-sharing system. They received support from the Advanced Research Projects Agency. AT&T, the parent organization of Bell Labs, ceased the experiment and disposed of the GE computers in 1969.
Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson created the PDP-7 minicomputer in the 1970s. It could process messages consisting of at least 2000-2500 letters. The duo developed UNIX in a short period. It’s an innovative operating system that isn’t tied to any certain computer architecture.
Dennis Ritchie contributed to the development of operating systems. For example, he worked on Plan 9 in 1995 and Inferno in 1996. He was also involved in creating the programming language Limbo.
